Long answer to a short question, yes I think it’s worth it. I didn’t have experience at sea really until I started doing it professional - nobody does but you have your training to fall back on. Captains will be watching/helping you if there’s a lot of traffic and you just have to ask for help if you don’t understand. Nobody has experience truly until they graduate with their license and they go to sea. Part of a seagoing license is actually spending time onboard ships (cadet ships like internships and their school ship) to gather Seatime and also sitting and attending STCW classes (you don’t need to know what those are now but they are basically worldwide standardized training in lifesaving shit for example). You will absolutely not be able to complete the full graduate program online, you need to contact the school and get clarification. It’s wild how often people reach out to me on LinkedIn to come work for them. Unless they take away your license there’s ALWAYS work. That kid who “had no prospects” was being a defeated loser. Lol “you aren’t a real man til you’ve been fired from crowley” (as one of my favorite teachers use to say) If you have any questions feel free to DM me. It’s an excellent option for some but I want you out here as an officer making as much money as possible as quickly as possible. Not judging anyone here but with your degree it think you’d find that the SIU program would be mind numbing and below your standards of learning. I would like to tell you how 24 is still really young to get into this industry, I’ve known people a lot older than you that have attended a maritime academy with great success. I personally went to massachusetts maritime academy but it’s a standard 4 year college bachelors degree they do not yet have a seagoing graduate/masters program. They are the only maritime academy right now accepting people already with degrees into their graduate programs and preparing them to go to sea. Your BEST bet is attending SUNY Maritime in their Graduate Programs. I work half the year all over the world, I’ve never made less than 120k (starting out as a 3rd mate), and I get to spend a lot of time with my grandparents and traveling on my own in my off time and I actually have the money to do whatever I want. 30/f I think it’s the best job that exists.
